Hi everyone! I'm Martin, and I'm a professional, certified tour-guide for Berlin and surrounds. German-born and raised, I moved to Berlin in the late 1980s, experiencing the fall of The Wall first-hand. In the mid-1990s I moved first to London, then to Paris, and back to the UK again, where I studied European Cinema Studies at Bath University before being offered a bursary from Warwick to do Ph.D. My Ph.D. thesis was on a Holocaust-related topic which, in 2010, brought me back to Berlin where I briefly worked at the Holocaust Foundation before finally finding my vocation by becoming a professional tour guide.

  • What you will see and do

This history tour takes you back to the time when East-Berlin was the capital of the German Democratic Republic, tracing the remnants of a totalitarian country behind the Iron Curtain where surveillance prevailed, the infamous Stasi had well-nigh total control, and where the regime had made it their mission to outdo the West as best it could. Along the tour, you'll see the megalomaniac, Stalinist, avenues created in the 1950s, the intimidating Stasi headquarters, the Wall Memorial, the SED party HQ (now the swanky SoHo House), the location where Ronald Reagan held his famous speech in 1987 ("Mr. Gorbatchev: Tear. Down. This. Wall!", and Alexander Platz - once a beautiful square and full life until its sheer total destruction during WWII before it was rebuilt five times its original size by the GDR regime, replete with so-called "Plattenbauten" with the TV-tower at its center, now a Berlin landmark.
